Struggling Readers
I am the mother of a boy who hates reading. My son was diagnosed with dyslexia when he was in second grade. Since then his LD has made his school adventures very difficult. His reading level is two grades lower than most of his classmates. He has a tough time writing and spelling as well.
In this blog I plan to share some of my experiences in helping my son. The journey isn’t over. He still has a lot of school left, but things are looking up.
On the right of this blog you will see a category titled “Struggling Readers”. If you click on that you will find posts on the following topics. More will be added.
- How can parents recognize or spot the warning signs of reading issues. If your child is young and you feel he or she is having trouble, here is a list of things you can look for.
- Do graphic novels make good reading material for struggling readers?
- How to encourage your child to read. Tips to help parents get through those awful reading sessions.
- High – low or hi – low books for high school aged students. These are books with more mature, fun storylines but at a lower reading level. (Many of these posts talk about the importance of a Lexile Measurement as well.)
- Books for boys who are struggling readers and in middle or high school.
- Are Kindles or other ereaders good for poor readers and why?
- Tools for struggling readers and writers.
Keep your chin up parents. You are the key to your child’s success AND you can do it!

Hi Jenna,
Kudos to you for taking the time to help other moms and parents to cope with struggling readers. Some people just give up, shrug their shoulders and say “let the teachers help him.” I hope that there’s more like you in this world
Thanks Jenn. I appreciate your kind words.
